Being a single African American male entrepreneur is a journey marked by resilience, ambition, and the continuous balancing of personal desires against professional demands. It’s a path less traveled, laden with unique challenges and opportunities that shape daily experiences in profound ways.
As an entrepreneur, my life is a blend of passion-fueled late nights, strategy-packed thoughts, and the relentless pursuit of innovation. This hustle is more than a job; it’s a lifestyle. In addition, I must balance that with fatherhood. The dedication required to build and sustain a business and be an active/present father, can often overshadow personal time, making it difficult to maintain a vibe, relationships or even cultivate new ones. Ladies, you know this first hand, because it’s normally women, who must fine that balance, as single mother’s, especially if you’re picking up the slack of the father. Still, as entrepreneurs, their are those moments, when we want to feel human and not machine. This juggling act is not just about managing time but also about nurturing my own emotional and physical well-being.
The entrepreneurial spirit is a vibrant one, always on, always thinking ahead. In the social arena, this intensity can be misunderstood. When encountering single women, the dynamic often fluctuates between genuine interest and slight bewilderment.
Navigating the world of modern dating, especially through the lens of social media and dating apps, adds another layer of complexity. These platforms, while useful, often push some people to curate personas that might not wholly represent who they are, focusing more on snapshot impressions rather than deep, meaningful connections. As time progressed, the way we vibe, has lessen in quality in some areas and become so impersonal. As a result, it becomes crucial to ask the right questions and express genuine curiosities that reveal core compatibilities beyond the surface. For single men like myself, the questions I hope to be asked by a potential partner should uncover more than what’s on my business card. They might include:
1. “What inspired you to start your business, and what continues to motivate you?”
2. “How do you balance your professional ambition with your personal life?”
3. “What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working on your business?”
4. “How do you define success, both in business and in personal relationships?”
5. “What’s your relationship like with God/family?”
Conversely, there are questions that single women looking to connect with solid, like-minded men, like myself, might consider asking to ensure clarity and compatibility:
1. “What qualities do you value most in a relationship?”
2. “How do you handle stress or setbacks, both in your business and personal life?”
3. “What are your long-term personal and professional goals?”
4. “How do you prioritize your time, especially when it comes to family and relationships?”
5. “What have you learned from your past relationships that shape your approach to new ones?”
These questions serve as bridges, facilitating a deeper understanding of each other’s worlds. They invite conversations that go beyond the superficial, paving the way for meaningful connections that can withstand the rigors of entrepreneurial life. For me, it’s important for a woman to feed meal
Healthy meals, both personally and professionally, and that had nothing to do with a plate of food.
The task, then, for us as single entrepreneurs and the women we encounter, is to embrace a curiosity about each other that transcends our professional identities. We need to cultivate a mutual understanding that while our businesses may be an extension of who we are, they are not the totality of our identities
Although I have the wisdom of 50 year old, I have the energy, spirit and vigor of a 25-year-old. I find myself in a unique position within the social and dating scenes. My youthful energy not only fuels my entrepreneurial ventures but also significantly shapes my personal life, especially in how I connect with others. Interestingly, this vitality often draws the attention of younger women, sparking interactions that are as enlightening as they are unexpected at times.
The dynamics of these relationships are colored by stark contrasts in generational experiences and expectations of love and partnership. Women from my generation, those who came of age in the 80s and 90s, experienced a different type of courtship and relationship dynamic—one that the millennial generation might view as quaint or even outdated in today's digital dating age and how they choose to connect with the opposite sex. Back then, love was often pursued in a more traditional sense: conversations were had face-to-face, connections were built over time, and the pace of getting to know someone was generally slower, influenced heavily by direct interaction rather than mediated through screens and texts.
Today, love and relationships are often characterized by their fluidity and the array of options available. The digital landscape has revolutionized how some connections are initiated and maintained. However, this shift has also led to a sense of transience and dissatisfaction, elements notably absent from the dating experiences of my era.
In conversations with younger women, I’ve listened as they express a longing for some of the old-fashioned dating rituals—a desire for deeper connections and more meaningful interactions. It appears that despite the freedom and vast choices available today, there is a palpable sense of something significant being lost. Our younger brothers are depriving our younger sisters of; what it feels like to feel…This gap between generations reveals not only differing expectations but also varying definitions of what it means to love and be loved.
As a writer, artist, filmmaker, man, engaging with women across a spectrum of ages has offered me valuable insights into the broader shifts in societal norms and personal expectations. One recurring theme is the question of why so many successful men and women, particularly entrepreneurs, remain single. Values and expectations around relationships have evolved. Today, many individuals seek personal fulfillment and self-realization first, which wasn't as emphasized in previous generations. The shift from in-person to digital communication has altered how relationships form and develop. While connecting is easier, deeper communication required for long-lasting relationships can be harder. The blending of diverse expectations and lifestyles can complicate relationship dynamics, making it difficult for people to find compatibility. Through these interactions, I strive to understand and perhaps bridge the gap between what was and what is. Each conversation is a learning opportunity, a chance to see the world through another’s eyes and to reflect on the changes that have reshaped our social fabric. This exploration is not just about finding romance but about understanding the human condition across generations, and possibly finding solutions to why so many remain alone despite a seeming abundance of opportunities to connect.
As we continue to evolve both in business and in love, perhaps the challenge lies not just in adapting to the new but in integrating the valuable aspects of the old—creating a new synthesis where respect, understanding, and patience govern our romantic pursuits. This blend of old and new may just be the key to unlocking satisfying, enduring relationships for entrepreneurs and professionals navigating the complex waters of modern love.
In the end, as we navigate both the entrepreneurial and dating landscapes, the key to maintaining a healthy life lies in balance and genuine connection. For me…It’s about finding someone who appreciates the late nights and early mornings but also pushes you to step away, breathe, and live in the moment. It’s about finding harmony in the hustle. I’ve been a hustler all my life…Only few harmonies have meshed in my life…But what’s for me is for me! #whowithme
