Growing up without a father figure was like navigating a ship without a compass. My childhood was filled with moments of confusion, trying to understand life’s complexities with only my working mom and elderly grandmother as guides. As I reflect on those years, I realize that many of my struggles stemmed from the choices and decisions I made along the way.
As a kid, I often made poor choices without fully grasping their consequences. These choices evolved and amplified as I transitioned into my teen years and then into young adulthood. The absence of a strong male role model made it challenging for me to differentiate between right and wrong, and I found myself gravitating towards activities and associations that weren’t conducive to a healthy lifestyle.
These poor choices eventually led me down a path I never imagined—I ended up in juvenile facilities and later in adult state and federal institutions. Each incarceration was a harsh reality check, a testament to the ripple effects of my decisions.
It wasn’t until I hit rock bottom that I began to understand the importance of making healthy choices and decisions. Prison became my classroom, where I learned the hard way that every choice carries weight, affecting not just me but everyone around me. I saw firsthand the detriment of poor decisions—broken relationships, lost opportunities, and a life consumed by regrets.
But amid the darkness, I found a glimmer of hope. I started to educate myself, seeking knowledge about making better choices and understanding the psychology behind decision-making. I realized that change begins within, with a shift in mindset and a commitment to self-improvement.
Coming home from prison was a fresh start, but this time, I had a new direction, a new mindset, and a new plan. I surrounded myself with positive influences, sought mentorship, and embraced opportunities for personal and professional growth. It wasn’t easy, and there were moments of doubt and temptation, but I kept reminding myself of the consequences of my past choices.
Slowly but steadily, I began to rebuild my life. I focused on education, honed my skills, and forged meaningful connections. With each positive choice, I gained confidence and clarity about the life I wanted to live—a life free from the shackles of past mistakes.
Today, as I look back on my journey, I understand the profound impact of making healthy choices and decisions. It’s not just about avoiding trouble; it’s about creating a life of purpose, fulfillment, and contribution. Every decision, no matter how small, shapes our reality and influences our future.
I share my story not as a tale of despair but as a testament to the power of resilience and the potential for transformation. We all have the capacity to make better choices, to learn from our past, and to create a brighter tomorrow. It begins with a single choice—a choice to embrace change and to strive for a life filled with possibilities. I chose positive over negative, healthy over toxic, grind over being stagnant and I choose to see the glass as half full versus half empty! #whowithme
