Once upon a time, amidst the chaos of the streets, I found solace in words. It was a tough journey, marked by struggles and setbacks, but I discovered my passion for writing, while incarcerated. The streets had their allure, their own rhythm, but I knew deep down that my path lay elsewhere.
After a counselor saw something in me, that I didn’t see in myself at the time, I started penning down stories, pouring my heart and soul into each word. It wasn't just about escapism; it was about creating something meaningful, something that resonated with people, something other than what I was doing to land myself in prison. As I delved deeper into my craft, I realized that writing wasn't just a hobby—it was my calling.
But the prison and the streets have a way of testing one's resolve. There were moments of doubt, moments when it seemed easier to succumb to the allure of a different life. Yet, I held on, fueled by the belief that I had something important to share with the world.
I refused to let anyone deter me from my dreams. Rejection letters piled up, but with each rejection, I grew stronger. I honed my skills, learned from criticism, and kept pushing forward. And then, one day, it happened. I got published, while still locked up. My book became a bestseller. It was a moment of validation, a testament to years of hard work and perseverance. I still remember the uncontrollable tears that flowed down my face, when I entered my cell and saw the book package on my bunk. To see my thoughts, feelings, views, imagine on those pages, I knew I had found a new love. But I didn't stop there. I dared to dream bigger—I wanted to see my words come alive on the silver screen.
Turning my book into a film was a daunting task, filled with challenges and uncertainties. Yet, I approached it with the same determination that had brought me this far with my urban fiction novels and motivational books. It wasn't just about personal success; it was about proving that no obstacle is insurmountable if you're willing to put in the effort. When my first feature film wrapped, it was a surreal experience. Over ten years ago, I had adapted and co-produced a short film, based on an award winning short story I had written, and that was an enlightening journey. But this was different on so many levels. I actually wrote, produced and directed this feature adaptation. Seeing characters I had created, dialogues I had written, come to life was beyond anything I had felt as an indie filmmaker. I had seen other complete the task, aided them in it, but it’s one thing to assist and another to be in the driver seat. It’s my first step into the world of filmmaking, but it won’t be my last.
I am proud—not just of my achievements, but of the journey that led me here. It's a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of believing in oneself when no one else does. And now, as I look back, I want to encourage every aspiring writer, every dreamer out there, to keep going.
Find what you love, what you're great at, and never let go. The road may be tough, but each hurdle is a stepping stone to greatness. Believe in your dreams, work tirelessly towards them, and never allow anyone to derail you. Your story is waiting to be written, and the world is waiting to hear it and see it! #whowithme
